What happens when intimate data is used for coercion or blackmail?

By Aman Priyanshu

When intimate data is used for coercion or blackmail, it can have devastating consequences for the individuals involved. This type of exploitation can occur when sensitive information, such as personal photos, videos, or private messages, is obtained without consent and then used to manipulate or control the person. In many cases, the perpetrator may threaten to release the intimate data publicly or share it with others unless the victim complies with their demands. This can lead to significant emotional distress, fear, and a loss of personal autonomy for the individual whose privacy has been violated. It can also have long-term psychological effects and damage the individual’s reputation and relationships.

An analogy to understand this situation is to imagine someone breaking into your home and stealing your most personal belongings, like family photos and personal diaries. Then, instead of returning them, the thief threatens to share these private items with the public unless you do what they say. This violation of your personal space and the threat of exposure can leave you feeling vulnerable and powerless. Similarly, when intimate data is used for coercion or blackmail, it’s like an invasion of the most private aspects of a person’s life, causing immense distress and a loss of control over their own information.
